About This Live Event
Join Ray as he talks through each demonstration with step-by-step reasoning and justifying his strategy, while answering your questions live. Ray has painted hundreds of locations throughout his career and has accumulated a vast library of images from each of these locations. The challenge with painting is every location has its demands and strategy with the way one approaches their painting. Situational challenges from water to atmospheric perspective, from bright colors to light/dark shapes; all have their considerations. Most times Ray starts with the dark shapes but occasionally he may put a bright color down first or isolate a very light shape.Â
Ray will pace us through his process of painting; selection, layout, block-in, and refining. Each step will illustrate his academic approach as applied to painting the landscape. Many situational strategies revealed.
Mark Daniel Nelson brings the insight of an accomplished artist to the hosting of this program. Carole Gray-Weihman,award-winning artist, will offer insights and help with answering your questions and providing technical support.

COURSE OUTLINEÂ
May 4: Class 1- Wild Water! Ray shows his approach to painting a crashing wave and rocks. Narrowing your focus on gray scales and color temperature is key to this demonstration. This is strategy you will need for capturing truly wet water.
May 11: Class 2- Springtime Creek. This demonstration will be focusing on organizing your light and dark shapes and finding a tension and balance within the shapes. Spring greens can be a very difficult challenge. Slight temperature changes will help as well as attention to color intensity. Â
May 18: Class 3- Vermilion Cliffs. Join Ray for this sunrise painting where the fleeting light makes for fleeting colors. That warm light you see in the morning with the subtle shapes that don't last very long off the distance, make these cliffs truly monumental. The challenge here is capturing the right color temperatures with the lightest colors that you have on your palette (premixing colors) Â
May 25: Class 4- Grand Canyon. Its all about light and shadow AND atmospheric perspective. Find your lightest brightest color and key the rest of the painting from there ( just as long as you’ve managed your A P well).
Homework - Facebook Group Page will be where students paintings will be posted. There will be light critiquing.Â
