May 7th
Understanding Form--The power of value! We will illustrate how design and form are created in value or black and white.
Demo: Light on objects and cite the vocabulary of form with still life of spheres cubes and other shapes. Discussion of seeing your scene through the filter of form is the first step to painting.
Homework: Find a scene and paint it in black and white which illustrates the vocabulary used in the form demo
May 14th
Visualizing your Painting-- We will explore different ways to visualize, convert and analyze scenes, photos and paintings in black and white. Photoshop, Procreate, Brushes, Photos, MVP red filter, all are/have several filters for looking at scenes through a lens of black and white. There are also apps for cell phones. Squinting! Any way you visualize scenes is up to your personal preference. We will explore historic paintings and convert them to black and white and simplify them through filters to analyze these at their basic level.
Demo: Referring to a historic composition Ray will paint a quick version from his reference.
Homework: Find a scene with a similar composition to a historic painting through visualizing/filtering in black and white and paint a black and white version of your scene while channeling the historic paintings’ composition.
May 21st
Exploring Design will be the focus of this class. Design tools such as 2/3,1/3, little bit will be cited as well as formal design concepts of S-curve, steelyard, pattern and circular. Although these formulas are very effective, these aren’t necessarily the only route to success. Design can be boiled down to unequal shapes, unequal angles and asymmetry. These will be discussed and samples cited.
Demo: Grisaille painting approach is an effective way to see your design in b&w and painting over in color,
Homework: Painting a full color painting using the grisaille method of black and white first and then taking it to full color,
May 28th
Ongoing Tools for Design Strategies--Keeping these these approaches in mind is tricky. There are a couple of strategies to stay present. 1) Beware of repeating design flaws. 2) try markers in a sketchbook 3) Try a quick sketch in gouache with 3 or 4 values 4) Start with a grisaille method with your dark shapes first and then work to color. In the field do small oil sketches first. You’ll get an idea of what it looks like right away.
Demo: Full color painting starting with dark shapes first followed by light shapes.
Homework: Repeat demo using your subject.
