COURSE OUTLINE

June 3

Class 1-- Simplified Proportions of the Head -- Small, SIMPLE heads! Black and white or two tones only! We will examine and practice finding proportions, features and paint only the simplest planes of the head and study placement of the features. I will demonstrate and work from photo reference and from the John Asaro Planes of the Head cast. We’ll paint the simplest planes of men, women and children under all different light directions. These simple planes are my springboard to more developed form. We will continue to practice separating light from shadow in the simplest way.

June 10

Class 2-- Painting the head by practicing to paint the big “Averages” first using color! We will paint from photo reference and practice establishing the big averages first of flesh in light, flesh in shadow, background and clothing. Taken from the Robert Henri “The Art Spirit” book, by pre-mixing all of your big averages, it helps to keep the painting process more organized and helps to establish a path to harmony in color and value. We will begin with our big “motherlode” piles of paint and learn to compare these averages.
