COURSE OUTLINE
March 4th
Session 1 -Through the figure, we will have a quick refresher of the six drawing styles introduced in the first online course. One point perspective will be discussed and demonstrated so you can introduce multiple figures to a composition. Based on Andrew Loomis' “Ideal Proportions” from his book “Figure Drawing for all its Worth.” Peggi will demonstrate the tools I use to introduce character and animation to the figure.
March 11th
Session 2 - The Potential of the 10 Step Value Scale. With a quick refresher of the vocabulary of light on form, we will then jump into exploring the importance of building a value plan in a painting and the role it plays in design. By using the "1/3, 2/3, little bit" proportion guidelines, this can bring a start to the building of solid design through dark values and light values. Examining master artworks and dissecting their value structure, should help bring to light an important tool for designing.
April 1
Session 3 - Exploring the effects of light on color. We will have a quick refresher of how color relates to value. Through the use of a limited palette and a full palette, we will explore how color responds to different light sources. What happens under a strong light source? What happens to color under a more subdued light source. We will practice fine-tuning our observation skills and observe color relationships and color properties.
April 15th
Session 4 - Pattern Painting! What happens when we create works with no definitive light source! Referring to Mary Cassatt’s aquatints and the Japanese woodcuts of the Edo Period we will explore how this creates a new way to approach design. Now instead of designing with dark and light created by a strong light source, we’ll be thinking and designing with “local value” and “local color.”
