RAY ROBERTS: FUNDAMENTALS OF STRUCTURE & DESIGN IN THE SEASCAPE | JUNE 8-29

Join Ray as he talks through each demonstration with step-by-step reasoning and justifying his strategy, while answering your questions live. Ray has painted hundreds of locations throughout his career and has accumulated a vast library of images from each of these locations. The challenge with painting is every location has its demands and strategy with the way one approaches their painting. Situational challenges from water to atmospheric perspective, from bright colors to light/dark shapes; all have their considerations. Most times Ray starts with the dark shapes but occasionally he may put a bright color down first or isolate a very light shape.

Ray will pace us through his process of painting; selection, layout, block-in, and refining. Each step will illustrate his academic approach as applied to painting the landscape. Many situational strategies revealed.

Mark Daniel Nelson brings the insight of an accomplished artist to the hosting of this program. Carole Gray-Weihman,award-winning artist, will offer insights and help with answering your questions and providing technical support.

Online Workshop - Hosted with Mark Daniel Nelson, assisted by Carole Gray-Weihman and Peggi Kroll RobertsEach class is at least 1 hour (10AM PDT - 11AM PDT) or (17:00 UTC - 18:00 UTC). Please be prepared for class to run over-time.

COURSE OUTLINE 

 

Jun 8: Class 1 - Shimmering Sea - We will explore the effects of spectral highlights reflecting the sun on water. "Water is like a rolling mirror”- Art Hughes.  And with the surface shape constantly rippling, rocking, and rolling, with crests and troughs, there can be quite the challenge to convincingly create the effect of that light.

• Self-Paced Homework - Create a seascape and/or /water scene illustrating this method for painting the sun reflecting on water.*

Jun 15: Class 2 - The Ocean at Night - By adjusting your range of values and colors, the artist has an opportunity to create a charming effect of the ocean in the evening. Much of the previous class will come into play in this class as the use of color temperature will be most important with this approach.

• Self-Paced Homework - Nightime seascape or water scene. Find your range of values and colors to create a believable nighttime painting. Be mindful of design and landscapes.*

Jun 22: Class 3 - Structure of a Wave - The key to understanding how to paint a wave is understanding the surface and shape of waves in different stages. Waves reflect and absorb light in a variety of ways in their different stages, depending on the light source.

• Self-Paced Homework - Create a painting that demonstrates the understanding of a wave.*

Jun 29: Class 4 - Strategies for Improving a Design in a Seascape - We will explore different ways to objectively see our work and apply strategies for improving seascapes. Whether it’s values, color temperature, drawing, or design, analyzing our own work can be our greatest challenge. Having clear cut approaches will push us closer to our goals in all painting subjects. Familiarity with Photoshop or Procreate will help but tracing paper and pencil will work as well.

• Self Paced Homework - Before and After - Select a painting, making sure you take a picture of it, explore different fixes for it and apply your best choice to improving your painting.*

*Note: With all of these classes, it will be important when painting homework assignments that an interesting pattern of light and dark shapes be the primary consideration in painting.
