You begin with the drawing and then do a block-in of the shadow mass. By keeping the shadow mass no darker than a value of 5 on a scale of 1 to 10, this forces you to keep the remaining masses lighter and in proper relation to the value of the shadow mass. Like music and playing a chord in the lower, middle or higher octave, the relationships stay the same. Think of the value scale as a keyboard of 10 notes.
